All-Star Baseball certainly lives up to its name. It offers the largest stable of former greats, some 50 in all, and it even offers many of the standouts and stars from the old Negro Baseball League. Its obvious Acclaim decided the best way to deal with the competition is to match it in terms of baseball prowess, but at the same time, outdo them in terms of extras: All-Star throws shovel fulls of extras. Extras like a trivia game, stadium tours, and DVD content. It even includes classic ballparks, just in case you really miss Shibe Park. There are seven fantasy ballparks in currently baseball-free North American cities, and you can pick and choose from over 30 mascots, making the expansion team options all the more interesting. All-Star also offers a deep franchise mode that rivals text simulations like Over the Top Baseball. Baseball lives and dies by the pitcher/batter duel and All-Star has you covered here. How? By offering every option the competition can muster. You can use a cursor system (like MVP Baseball), a timing based system (less realistic, but good for new players), and a system like High Heat where you have to watch the ball carefully (most realistic). Each system works but the cursor-based option could is sub par: the information regarding where and when to swing appears too late. The gameplay has other flaws. Fielding feels soft, unresponsive and slow, and the AI is stupidly aggressive at times: stealing when it shouldn't and slugging when a sacrifice is called for. All-Star has good graphics--not the best available but very good and the animations are all smooth and lifelike. You can even identify many players by their batting stance alone. The audio is a standout, specifically the commentary, which is accurate, insightful, and even includes entertaining side conversations about the rules and quirks of the game. All-Star isn't quite the best baseball game you can buy for your console system, but it offers the best overall package if you aren't sure what you want. Out of ALL the video games I've tried, this still SOMEHOW makes the best. I've tried MVP Baseball 2005, MLB 99, and All-Star Baseball 2002. CONS:
O.K. First this game is SOOOOOOOOO unrealistic, it hurts. There are VERY STUPID errors that should never happen. For example: When my fielder locks himself in position to get ready to catch the ball, sometimes you will think "Why doesn't he move his glove up? He better do it soon... OUCH!" The ball will either fly past him, or go off his noggen.
Second: There is also what I like to call it, a suction glove. When you hit a ball sometimes it will look like it will fly by him, but NOOOO, the fielder will just dive or stick his hand out &...WHAM! You are out!
Third- There is only ONE 1 button, the R1 button, that you use to dive, jump, and slide on defense, & that WILL get on your nerves. PROS:
The game is very easy to control, although you can't manually slide on offense, it's still very fun to play. The season mode is good, but it doesn't go as deep as some games, I'm sure. What I like the most about it is the pithing controls. Unlike MVP 2005, where you have to use a pitch meter, in this game all you have to do is select where you want to pitch, and let 'er Rip!
All & All, MVP may have better graphics and control, But this game RULES!!! & for this price, you would have to be crazy not to buy it. But if you're lookin for graphics, turn to MVP Baseball 2005.

I would be giving this game a 5/5 if it were not for one problem this game is a very well made game it is feature packed and the feilding is flawless. Also they included many more teams such as negro league all stars and the best players of all time on one team. The 1 problem that really drags this game down is the batting system. When the pitcher throws it the icon completely dissapears and you have to guess where it will go. This may not seem like a big problem but when you strike out endless times you will understand. And you can't even change the batting system so there is my review it is all true and I hope it was helpfull.

if you like baseball games, this is the best one out there. unmatched gameplay, improved graphics etc. they could follow EA sports' franchise mode a little better. certainly room for improvement there. the user interface is tough to learn, and i found myself getting "stuck" on a particular page at times, but once you figure it out the game is pure crack. 5/5

I was very much looking forward to receiving this game based on reviews of the play. I love baseball and really wanted to find a realistic baseball game. Sadly, this game is not the game I thought it would be. Indeed, this game also has some serious technical problems that Acclaim does not seem to care about. First of all the problems- 1)When pitching on a count that is less than a full count, the batter fouls off the ball and yet the batter is out. What?! This is frustrating and annoying. The announcers say "foul ball" and yet the batter sits down and you are charged with an out. 2) In a run down between two bases, if the baserunner gets within 3-4 feet of the player with the ball, you are called out. Ridiculous- there is a substantial amount of space in between the players, yet, the runner is out. Here are the game play problems I have found- 1) The batter lines the ball out to the pitcher AT LEAST 6-8 times a game. This rarely happens in a real baseball game. 2) Home Runs are WAY too easy to hit. It is not unusual to hit 6-10 home runs a game, even on All Star level. So far, I have had games of 18-16, 22-19, 21-17. This can be fun for awhile yet, sometimes the batter even BREAKS HIS BAT and hits a home run! How can this be?! To top it all off and make matters worse, I have tried to contact Acclaim electronic sports and they have refused to respond or even try to give me some satisfaction. I emailed them twice with my complaints and received no response. I then called their customer line (not even a toll free call!)and after I was on hold for quite awhile, I was told a "game consultant" would call me back within 20 minutes. Again, no return phone call, no response. They are definitely portraying an "we don't care" attitude. For my money, I would never buy a game from Acclaim again if this is the way they treat customers.In summary, do not buy this game. It will only make you angry with all the technical problems that it has.
