Product Description Hypothesis testing? Correlation? Did you say logistic regression?? You are probably used to seeing concerned looks on the faces of your methods students. Student anxiety about this course always runs high given the nature of seemingly intimidating material. Philip Pollock's first order of business is to get math-phobic students comfortable learning and using the tools of political analysis. His brief and accessible text puts students at ease with a conversational writing style and plenty of real-world and political examples. Providing a strong conceptual foundation, The Essentials of Political Analysis walks students through the basics--measuring concepts, formulating and testing hypotheses, describing variables--and then, through a companion SPSS volume with easy-to-use canned data sets, prepares them to apply what they learn immediately on the computer. The author's engaging and straightforward prose clearly introduces key terms and concepts while chapter-opening objectives cue students to learning goals. Over eighty tables and figures enhance important textual material. Class-tested chapter exercises promote skill application and aid student review. Fans of Pollock's practical introduction to the methods course will appreciate the second edition's many improvements, from more comparative and international material to a brand new chapter on logistic regression. Introducing students to one of the discipline's most widely used statistical tools, students learn the logic of logistic regression, maximum likelihood estimation and how to convert logits into probabilities.

The best methods book I have seen October 19, 2005 Robert B. Scaife (Bethesda, MD) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
This book is excellend for graduate and undergraduate students alike. Fortunately this book was written by someone who knows what most students of political science want know: how to interpret data. This book is to be used with SPSS which is arguably one of the best statistical programs available. Anecdotely, I am horrible at math. This book is light on math. It does explain the concepts behind the statistics without booging you down it too much technical jargon. You will learn Chi-square an what it is for but you are not expecte to know the formula. This book may be light on math for students truly interested in the actuarial sciences and its apllication to political science, but for those who wnat to know how to use statistics for interpreting political science, this is the book for you.
Not for Beginners March 8, 2005 D. Fitts (Indiana) 4 out of 15 found this review helpful
This was the required text for an intro course that I took. This book is definitely not for beginners. It is too wordy which makes it difficult to understand. If you're a Political Science professor, for the love of God do not give this book to your students.
